The sideplot of the sixth episode of the eleventh season of Family Guy (Episode #194) is about Stewie finding a turtle in a pond and taking it home, but it turns out to be evil. At the end of the episode the two fight, and as the turtle is about to finish Stewie with a knife, Mario jumps in stomping on it and killing it, saving Stewie.
Note that since this is not an authorized appearance of Mario, we can't consider him the actual character, but only a parody character based on him, and therefore this is a type 3 link.
Alternatively, since Stewie recognizes him as "Super Mario", we might say that Stewie recognized the videogame character, even if he's not actually him, and this would be a type 2 link.
