This page explains in detail the interactions between the F-Zero series and the Super Smash Bros. series.
Super Smash Bros.[]
January 21, 1999
Captain Falcon, the main character from the F-Zero series, appears as an unlockable character in Super Smash Bros.
Him and Ness share the distinction of being the only representation their respective series get in the game, not having a stage nor any item, and the only music track available being their respective victory theme.
Captain Falcon[]
In-game bio:
A regular pilot in the great galactic race F-ZERO Grand Prix, Captain Falcon is skilled at collecting prize money. Much about his past remains hidden in shadow, but it’s clear that many a villain hold a powerful grudge against him.
Works:
- F-Zero (SNES)
- F-Zero X (N64)
Captain Falcon is one of the four unlockable characters in Super Smash Bros. He is unlocked after completing 1P Mode in under 20 minutes with no continues.
Being a racer in the original series, his moveset is original to the game itself. He's depicted as a very fast and powerful fighter.
He arrives to the arena jumping out of his vehicle, the Blue Falcon.
His taunt involves him turning to his right, saluting, and saying “Show me your moves!” This taunt is original to Super Smash Bros. but wold later become a catchphrase associated to the character.
His 1P Game end screen shows an image of Captain Falcon taken directly from F-Zero X.
Special moves:
- Netural - Falcon Punch: Captain Falcon charges up for a moment and unleashes a powerful fist, surrounded in flames that take the shape of a falcon. This can also be used for horizontal recovery. He announces the move saying "Falcon... Punch!"
- Up - Falcon Dive: Captain Falcon leaps up in the air. If Captain Falcon grabs onto an opponent, he will release with a fiery explosion.
- Down - Falcon Kick: Captain Falcon does a jump kick either sideways if on the ground, or downwards if on air. He names the move when performing it.
- Purple Clothes - 1P:
- Black Clothes - 2P: Based on his appearance in the Japanese commercial for F-Zero X.
- Red Clothes - 3P & Red Team (Blood Falcon outfit): Based on his clone rival, Blood Falcon.
- White Clothes - 4P (Jody Summer): The colors resemble Jody Summer’s outfit.
- Green Clothes - Green Team: The color scheme is based on Draq's machine, the Mighty Typhoon.
- Blue Clothes - Blue Team: The brighter color resembles Captain Falcon in the box art for the original F-Zero, and is also based on his appearance from F-Zero X.
Music Track[]
- 23: The victory fanfare of Captain Falcon is a techno rock remix of the end-of-race track heard in F-Zero X.
Super Smash Bros. Melee[]
November 21, 2001
Super Smash Bros. Melee features from the F-Zero series:
- 1 playable character (Captain Falcon)
- 2 standard stages
- 1 adventure stage (F-Zero Grand-Prix)
- 9 trophies
- 3 music tracks
Captain Falcon[]
Captain Falcon returns as the only F-Zero character in the game and is now a starting character. No new game was released between Super Smash Bros. and Melee, but his look was updated to make his design closer to F-Zero X, and the color of his spandex more of a dark gray-blue color, similar to Zoda's Death Anchor.
He retains the same alternate outfits from the previous game, but they are now all freely selectable, rather than the Green and Blue outfits being exclusive to team battles.
The Red outfit now also changes the logo on his back from "Blue Falcon No.7" to "HELL HAWK" in the Japanese version, and "BLOOD HAWK" in other versions, to match the name of Blood Falcon's vehicle.
His taunt now has a different animation when facing left: while still turning to his right and facing away from the camera, he now turns his head and does a more extravagant salute.
His moveset is the same with only minor changes, most notably his Falcon Punch now having a significantly longer startup time. Like every other character, he now also has a Side Special Move: Raptor Boost. Captain Falcon dashes forward to hit his opponent. If he’s on the ground, he punches upwards. If he’s midair, then he punches downwards. Like his other moves, this seems original to the Super Smash Bros. franchise, though the pose at the end could be a reference to the uppercut he makes in the F-Zero manual comic.
Stages[]
This time the game features two F-Zero stages, a starting one and an unlockable one.
Mute City[]
Mute City is the first track of every F-Zero game, and the stage in this game seems to be designed off of the one in F-Zero X.
Throughout the course, a levitating platform starts to take the fighters a little ahead of the finish line. Throughout some time, the platform stays below the track until it goes up for the next section. The platform follows the path of the track throughout four more sections in the stage. After the fifth section, it flies away from the loop in the race course and instead flies to right before the path of the finish line.
When players are dropped off at a section, there is a chance for the f-Zero racers to hit them. The floating platforms help avoid getting hit by all of them. These racers can be damaged and even destroyed with some very powerful attacks.
Big Blue[]
Big Blue is a watery planet in the F-Zero series, and appears in this game based specifically on its depiction from F-Zero X. It is unlocked after playing 150 Vs. matches.
The match takes place on the cars that race along the track. The players actually start on the Falcon Flyer, Captain Falcon's spacecraft from the F-Zero manual, which then flies offscreen to fly back in from time to time. Players would have to fight on the cars that can go at their own separate pace, especially the cars closest to the left and right ends of the screen.
F-Zero Grand-Prix[]
The eighth stage in Adventure Mode is based off of Big Blue. It can also be accessed in Event 33: Lethal Marathon. It is a race course with pink platforms hovering near the ground. Once the “!” appears, the player is warned to immediately get on the pink platform to not get hit by a car. There are several trophies scattered in Adventure Mode and the mode is completed when the players reaches the finish line.
Trophies[]
There are 9 F-Zero trophies in the game. Captain Falcon’s 3 character trophies, 3 stage element trophies, and 3 trophies about F-Zero elements not in the game.
Captain Falcon's first trophy and the three other racers trophies are based on their respective image from the F-Zero X select screen.
Music tracks[]
The game only features three F-Zero tracks: one for each of the two stages and a new version of Captain Falcon's victory theme.
- Mute City: A remix of the rock music heard on the first track in F-Zero X for N64, Mute City. It is heard in F-Zero Grand Prix: Mute City.
- Big Blue: A similar remix of the rock music heard on tracks in F-Zero X that take place on the planet Big Blue. It is heard in F-Zero Grand Prix: Big Blue as the primary song.
- Capt. Falcon's Victory: The victory fanfare of Captain Falcon is a rock remix of the end-of-race track heard in F-Zero X.
Other references[]
Samurai Goroh is seen in the introduction of Melee racing in his Fire Stingray against Captain Falcon's Blue Falcon on Mute City.
F-Zero GX[]
July 25, 2003
Captain Falcon's official render has him striking the same pose as his taunt from the Super Smash Bros. series.
Additionally, the ending theme of the game mentions the Falcon Punch in the line "When myopic confusion threatens your lunch / Falcon will be unleashing a Falcon Punch."
F-Zero: GP Legend (anime)[]
September 28, 2004
Captain Falcon uses the Falcon Punch in the final episode of the anime, using it agains Black Shadow to push him back into an explosion, killing him.
The move is performed in the same way as in Super Smash Bros. games, but Captain Falcon is sorrounded by blue flames instead of red, and they don't take the shape of a falcon.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
January 31, 2008
Super Smash Bros. Brawl features from the F-Zero series:
- 1 playable character (Captain Falcon)
- 2 stages
- 1 Assist Trophy helper (Samurai Goroh)
- 12 trophies
- 18 stickers
- 1 playable Masterpiece (F-Zero)
- 13 music tracks
Captain Falcon[]
Captain Falcon returns as the only playable F-Zero character in the game, and he's now unlockable by having him join the party in Adventure Mode, playing 70 VS. Matches, or, like in the original Super Smash Bros. by completing Classic Mode in under 20 minutes on Normal difficulty or higher.
His design is updated to include elements from F-Zero GX, but he also keeps some elements from the previous game, has some original design for accessories (having two pauldrons, which also look very different from the original, and wearing white kneecaps) and wears a long scarf like in F-Zero GP Legend.
He keeps the same alternate palette as previous games, but they come in different order and the Green outfit now changes his scarf pink instead of green.
His moveset received only minor changes, including now being able to turn around while charging the Falcon Punch. Like all other characters he receives a Final Smash move:
- Blue Falcon: the only "cinematic" Final Smash in the game, Captain Falcon calls in his vehicle, the Blue Falcon, which arrives from the foreground traversing the stage on a fixed position in front of the character; if it hits any opponent, Captain Falcon jumps in the vehicle and the opponents are transported on an F-Zero race track where they are run over by the Blue Falcon; the game then reprises on the stage, where the hit opponents receive significant knockback.
Stages[]
The game once again features two F-Zero stages, including a new starter stage, and the Big Blue stage, returning unchanged from Melee, unlocked by playing 10 Brawls as Captain Falcon.
Port Town Aero Dive[]
The new F-Zero stage in the game replacing Mute City, it's based on the track from F-Zero GX reproducing it accurately, also including the giant R.O.B. in the background.
It works similar to Mute City in Melee, with a floating platform transporting players on various locations on the track and having the F-Zero racers act as hazards. This time however the platform occasionally also turns 90 degrees before landing, so that the track is now seen from the side, with racers traveling across the stage, rather than always coming from the background; also not all stops on track are visited with every lap, instead being picked at random; the racers are also larger and deal more damage and knockback than in Melee, and they also can't be damaged.
Samurai Goroh[]
Captain Falcon's rival from F-Zero games appears as a summonable Assist Trophy in the game, based specifically on his appearance from F-Zero GX.
When summoned he runs across the stage slashing his katana at the opponents.
Trophies[]
There are 12 F-Zero trophies in the game. Captain Falcon's 2 character trophies, 1 Assist Trophy, 8 trophies about F-Zero racers and 1 about the Falcon Flyer from the Big Blue stage.
Stickers[]
There are 18 stickers based on artworks from F-Zero games.
F-Zero Masterpiece[]
Super Smash Bros. Brawl features "Masterpieces", playable trial versions of classic titles where the characters from the game originally appeared. One of these is F-Zero, which is unlocked by getting Captain Falcon to join the player's party in The Subspace Emissary.
The game starts at the first Mute City track, with the Blue Falcon selected. It ends after 40 seconds.
Music tracks[]
The game features 10 tracks in the F-Zero category (6 available from the start, 4 unlockable), all new to the series and all used on the Port Town Aero Dive stage, but there also are 2 F-Zero tracks in the Super Smash Bros. category returning from Melee and playing on Big Blue; there's also a completely new victory theme for Captain Falcon, listed among Sound Effects in the Fanfare category.
Base tracks:
- Mute City: a new remix of the recurring Mute City music, debuting in the original F-Zero.
- White Land: a remix of the music from the White Land tracks from F-Zero, including elements from White Land I and White Land II.
- Devil's Call In Your Heart: music from the Devil's Forest circuit from F-Zero X, taken directly from the game.
- Climb Up! And Get The Last Chance!: music from the White Land and Big Hand circuits from F-Zero X, taken directly from the game.
- Brain Cleaner: music from the replay screen from F-Zero GX and F-Zero AX, taken directly from the games; it's title was given in the games' official soundtrack as "Brain Cleaner (Replay)".
- Shotgun Kiss: music from the Casino Palace area from F-Zero GX and F-Zero AX, taken directly from the games; it's title was given in the games' official soundtrack as "Shotgun Kiss (Vegas Palace)".
- Big Blue (Melee): remix of the Big Blue music from F-Zero and F-Zero X, returning from Melee. It plays on Big Blue.
- Fanfare - 9: Captain Falcon's victory theme, it's based on the race complete fanfare from F-Zero GX.
Unlockable tracks:
- Fire Field: a rock remix of the music from the Fire Field track from F-Zero. It's unlocked by clearing Event 24: Come On! Blue Falcon!
- Car Select: menu music from F-Zero X, taken directly from the game. It's unlocked by collecting the respective CD.
- Dream Chaser: music from the "Silence" tracks from F-Zero X, taken directly from the game. It's unlocked by completing 10 Vs. matches in Port Town Aero Dive.
- Planet Colors: music from the Green Plant area from F-Zero GX and F-Zero AX, taken directly from the games; it's title was given in the games' official soundtrack as "Planet Colors (Green Plant Circuit)". It's unlocked by collecting the respective CD.
- Mute City (Melee): remix of the Mute City music, returning from Melee. It's unlocked by collecting the respective CD and then it plays on Big Blue.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and for Wii U[]
September 13, 2014 (3DS); November 21, 2014 (Wii U)
Being alternate versions of the same game, these two feature mostly the same content, except for stages and trophies and including some different modes. Specifically they feature from the F-Zero series:
- 1 playable character (Captain Falcon)
- 2 stages:
- 3DS: 1 stage (Mute City)
- Wii U: 1 stage
- 1 Assist Trophy (Samurai Goroh)
- 1 Mii fighter costume (Hat in base game; complete outfit DLC)
- 21 Trophies across both versions
- 3DS: 11 trophies
- Wii U: 15 trophies
- 1 playable Masterpiece (Wii U-exclusive mode)
- 15 Music tracks
Captain Falcon[]
Captain Falcon returns once again as the only selectable character from the F-Zero series, and like in Melee he's now a starting character.
With no new F-Zero game released after Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Captain Falcon retains his appearance from said game, and also keeps most of the same alternate outfits, but the Green outfit was changed significantly and he gets two new outfits, a Yellow one and a Cyan one.
In the Boxing Ring stage, he is referred to as “The Supersonic Slugger”, possibly referencing his Blue Falcon reaching high speeds and his famous Falcon Punch dealing a lot of damage in Super Smash Bros. games.
His moveset received some minor changes, including Raptor Boost no longer letting Captain Falcon fall off ledges when performed on the ground; like every other character he received two custom variants to each of his special moves:
- Neutral:
- Falcon Dash Punch: Captain Falcon dashes forward when striking the punch, but it's weaker.
- Mighty Falcon Punch: a larger falcon appears when striking the punch, having a larger hitbox, but the move has longer startup.
- Side:
- Heavy Raptor Boost: slower version of the Raptor Boost that travels less distance, but it hits harder and grants Captain Falcon with knockback resistance, making the move harder to interrupt.
- Wind-up Raptor Boost: Captain Falcon steps back before dashing forward, making the move act as a counterattack; it moves faster, but travels less distance and it's weaker than the regular move.
- Up:
- Falcon Strike: Captain Falcon jumps vertically higher than the regular Falcon Dive, but only strikes a punch without grabbing opponents.
- Explosive Falcon Dive: Captain Falcon doesn't jump as high as the regular Falcon Dive, but grabbed opponents are launched with a powerful explosion.
- Down:
- Falcon Kick Fury: a slower variation of the Falcon Kick that deals less damage, but hits multiple times and launches opponents at the end.
- Lightning Falcon Kick: a weaker version of the move with slower startup, it goes through enemies and causes electric damage. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS this variation needs to be unlocked by playing StreetSmash for the first time.
Stages[]
Each version of the game features only one F-Zero stage: the Nintendo 3DS version includes the new unlockable Mute City stage, while the Wii U version includes the Port Town Aero Dive stage, returning unchanged from Brawl and available from the start.
Mute City[]
The only F-Zero stage in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS., it's unlocked by winning three Smash battles as Captain Falcon.
Based on the first track from F-Zero, the stage accurately reproduces the 16-bit graphics from the original game. The battle starts on floating platforms hovering over the track, but the F-Zero racers also come in to provide extra platforms. The word "Check", used in the original game to indicate incoming from behind, appears above racers that are about to drive away; occasionally racers jump on a ramp, acting as additional hazards, and they drive over the pit stop, making the repearing beam appear from above, with its source serving as an obstacle.
Samurai Goroh[]
Samurai Goroh returns as the only F-Zero Assist Trophy in the game and acts the same way as he did in Brawl, but he now can be damaged by opponents.
Captain Falcon Mii outfit[]
One of the randomly unlockable Mii headgear in the game is Captain Falcon's Helmet.
A full Captain Falcon outfit was released as DLC on September 30, 2015. When purchased it will add Captain Falcon's Outfit for Mii Brawlers to the game, and will unlock Captain Falcon's Helmet if not already unlocked.
Trophies[]
The list of trophies differs between the two versions of the game, with the 3DS version including 11 F-Zero trophies and the Wii U version including 15 trophies. 5 trophies are the same in both versions, 6 trophies are exclusive for the 3DS version and 10 trophies are exclusive for the Wii U version, so there are 21 trophies in total across both versions.
Note: both versions of the game have an Alternate character trophy for Captain Falcon, therefore these are sometimes listed as appearing in both games, however since they feature completely different models, we list them as separate.
F-Zero Masterpiece[]
Masterpieces return only in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U due to the limitations of the 3DS console.
F-Zero is once again a playable masterpiece, starting in Mute City as the Blue Falcon, but the game is now available from the tart and the time has been extended to 3 minutes.
Music tracks[]
The 3DS version of the game only includes 2 F-Zero tracks, both new to the series, both playing on the Mute City stage and unlocked with it.
Both tracks return in the Wii U version, alongside all stage tracks from Super Smash Bros. Brawl (including the two tracks originally from Melee) and the new Red Canyon music, for a total of 15 music tracks; 13 tracks are initially available in the Wii U Version, while two tracks are unlocked. All tracks in the Wii U version play in the only F-Zero stage in the game, Port Town Aero Dive.
The Captain Falcon victory fanfare also returns unchanged from Brawl, but it's unavailable in the Sound Test and is therefore not listed here.
3DS unlockable:
- Mute City (Remix): a new remix of the recurring Mute City music. It's unlocked alongside the Mute City stage.
- Mute City (Original): the Mute City music taken directly from F-Zero. It's unlocked alongside the Mute City stage.
Wii U base:
- Mute City (Remix): remix of the Mute City music from Super Smash Bros. Melee, returning also from Brawl.
- Mute City Ver. 3: remix of the Mute City music, returning from the 3DS version of the game, it's renamed from "Mute City (Remix)" to distinguish it from the other two remixes in the game.
- Mute City (Original): the Mute City music taken directly from F-Zero, returning from the 3DS version of the game.
- Big Blue: remix of the Big Blue music from F-Zero and F-Zero X, returning from Melee and Brawl.
- Red Canyon: music from the Red Canyon tracks, taken directly from F-Zero.
- White Land: remix of the music from the White Land tracks from F-Zero, returning from Brawl.
- Fire Field: a rock remix of the music from the Fire Field track from F-Zero, returning from Brawl.
- Dream Chaser: music from the "Silence" tracks from F-Zero X, taken directly from the game and returning from Brawl.
- Devil's Call in Your Heart: music from the Devil's Forest circuit from F-Zero X, taken directly from the game and returning from Brawl.
- Climb Up! And Get the Last Chance!: music from the White Land and Big Hand circuits from F-Zero X, taken directly from the game and returning from Brawl.
- Brain Cleaner: music from the replay screen from F-Zero GX and F-Zero AX, taken directly from the games and returning from Brawl.
- Shotgun Kiss: music from the Casino Palace area from F-Zero GX and F-Zero AX, taken directly from the games and returning from Brawl.
- Planet Colors: music from the Green Plant area from F-Zero GX and F-Zero AX, taken directly from the games and returning from Brawl.
Wii U unlockable:
- Mute City Ver. 2: remix of the Mute City music from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It's unlocked by collecting the respective CD.
- Car Select: menu music from F-Zero X, taken directly from the game and returning from Brawl. It's unlocked by collecting the respective CD.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features from the F-Zero:
- 1 playable character (Captain Falcon)
- 3 stages
- 1 Assist Trophy (Samurai Goroh)
- 1 Mii fighter costume
- 15 spirits
- 26 music tracks
Captain Falcon[]
Captain Falcon is once again the only F-Zero character in the game, and not being one of the eight starting characters from the original Super Smash Bros. he's unlockable, like he was in the original game and in Brawl.
Like all other unlockable characters, he can be unlocked by either having him join the party in World of Light, playing enough VS matches, or clearing Classic mode with specific characters. Specifically, Captain Falcon is the 11th character unlocked playing VS Matches, and the first in Fox's Classic Mode unlock tree.
His design and moveset received only minor changes, and he retains the eight alternate outfits from the previous game.
Captain Falcon's Classic Mode is called "Up Close and Personal" and the opponents are fighters who specialize in close-range combat; the final boss is Bowser, followed by Giga Bowser.
Stages[]
Most F-Zero stages from previous games return in Ultimate, the only exception being Mute City from Super Smash Bros. Melee, likely because it was replaced by Port Town Aero Dive since Brawl. Despite that stage not returning, the Mute City stage from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS was renamed Mute City SNES to distinguish it from the Melee stage.
The game therefore features three F-Zero stages: Big Blue, Port Town Aero Dive, and Mute City SNES. All return mostly unchanged, save for graphical enhancements; these include the R.O.B. statue in Port Town Aero Dive now being redesigned to more closely resemble the R.O.B. character.
When Stage Hazards are turned off, racers are absent from Big Blue and Port Town Aero Dive, so in the former the Falcon Flyer remains onscreen constantly, serving as the only stable platform; in Mute City SNES the Blue Falcon remains as the only racer, serving as a center platform, but it doesn't jump on ramps nor go into the pit stop, and it remains basically stationary relatively to the two floating platforms.
When the Big Blue stage is played in Ω form or Battlefield form, the fight takes place on a platform vaguely based on the Falcon Flyer design, and the race track is far in the background.
Samurai Goroh[]
Samurai Goroh returns as the only F-Zero Assist Trophy in the game and acts the same way as he did in the previous game, still being vulnerable to opponents' attacks.
Captain Falcon Mii outfit[]
The Captain Falcon Helmet and Captain Falcon Outfit for Mii fighters return from the previous game, and they are now both available separately as random rewards or acquirable from the in-game Shop.
Spirits[]
The game features 15 Spirits from the F-Zero series, all based on racers who first debuted in F-Zero or F-Zero X, but all showing their artwork from F-Zero GX including their vehicle as well (though Captain Falcon, being a Fighter spirit, also has the alternate artwork from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate itself).
Given the racing nature of the franchise, all the Primary spirits from the F-Zero series have the "Speed ↑" attribute.
Following is a list of all F-Zero spirits in the game. Most of them are unlockable in Spirits mode, either in Adventure Mode or the Spirits Board, where the player must win in an fight with specific conditions, simulating a fight against the spirit's character. Additional unlock criteria are indicated when available.
Most of them can alternatively be obtained through random rewards or bought from the in-game store, but these criteria are not listed here.
