This page explains in detail the interactions between the Mother series and the Super Smash Bros. series.
Super Smash Bros.[]
January 21, 1999
Ness, the main character from Mother 2/EarthBound, appears as an unlockable character in Super Smash Bros. Him and Captain Falcon share the distinction of being the only representation their respective series get in the game, not having a stage nor any item, and the only music track available being their respective victory theme.
Ness[]
In-game bio:
Ness was a seemingly-average kid from Onett, but in truth, he was destined for much more. When a strange meteorite landed near his hometown, the little boy with psychic powers set out to save the world. Little has been said of Ness' character, and much remains hidden.
Works:
- EarthBound (SNES)
Ness is one of the four unlockable characters in Super Smash Bros. He is unlocked after playing 1P Mode in normal difficulty or higher with three stocks or less without continuing after defeat.
Since he comes from an RPG, most of his regular attacks are original, but he uses weapons from Earthbound in three of his moves: in his Forward Smash he uses the baseball bat, while in his Up Smash and Down Smash he uses the yo-yo. In his throw move he uses his telekinetic powers to throw the opponent.
Ness appears on stage by stopping his run from PSI Teleport, then he shakes off the gathered ash.
He taunts by facing the camera, nodding and saying "OK!", in which facing the screen could be a reference to when he meets The Camera Man and the "OK" could be a reference to the name select when selecting OK.
His special moves are based on PSI attacks from EarthBound although he's not able to learn them in the game:
- Neutral - PK Fire: Ness throws a lightning bolt that explodes into a pillar of flames when in contact of an opponent. He throws it horizontally when grounded, while he throws it downward when on air. In the original game the move is usable by Paula and it deals fire damage to multiple enemies.
- Up - PK Thunder: Ness releases a ball of lightning which can be controlled by the player. Ness can also launch himself in a trajectory based on where the ball pushes him from. In the original game the move is usable by Paula and Poo are able to use this move, and it summons a lightning that hits random enemies, with the possibility of it missing the target.
- Down - Psychic-Magnet: Ness surrounds himself in a small green bubble that absorbs energy-based projectiles to heal himself. In the original game the PSI Magnet move is usable by Paula and Poo and it absorbs some of the enemy's Psychic Points.
- Red Cap, 1P & Red Team: Based on his design from Earthbound.
- Yellow Cap, 2P: Based on the uniforms of the real life baseball team Hanshin Tigers, it's also reminiscent of the Gigantic Ants from Earthbound.
- Blue Cap, 3P & Blue Team: Is based on his younger self from Earthbound.
- Green Cap, 4P & Green Team The orange and green pattern closely resembles Everdred from Earthbound. However, the hat is green instead of black, while the shorts are orange instead of green.
Music track[]
- 24: The victory fanfare of Ness is a shortened, orchestrated version of the second half of the eight melodies (The full song is called "Smiles and Tears", not to be confused with the Eight Melodies from the prequel, MOTHER) that Ness collects throughout his journey at the eight "Your sanctuary" spots in EarthBound.
Other references[]
Various characters from EarthBound appear in Ness's ending picture.
Additionally, while officially considered an original item for the game, the Home-Run Bat item might be based on the baseball bat from the Mother series, considering that it uses an animation similar to Ness's Side Smash attack.
Super Smash Bros. Melee[]
November 21, 2001
Ness[]
Ness returns from the previous game and is now a starting character. His look has been upgraded for the new console, but he doesn't resemble his look in any specific game. His palette swaps are the same as the previous game.
His moveset remained mostly unchanged, but his Psychic-Magnet is renamed PSI Magnet and is blue instead of green.
With the addition of various throw moves he gets a new down throw where he uses his PK Fire to damage the opponent.
With the addition of the new Side Special attack feature in the game, Ness’s PK Fire attack is now his Side Special and he gains a new Neutral Special move, PK Flash: Ness releases a green ball of energy which can be controlled sideways. The ball also moves downwards as the player holds the attack button. After the player lets go, the ball explodes.
This is based on a move that can be used exclusively by Ness in EarthBound, where it creates a flash that can cause different effects on the opponent, and can be charged to four levels of power.
Stages[]
This time the game features two Mother stages, a starting one and an unlockable one.
Onett[]
The first setting of EarthBound and Ness’s hometown is a starting stage in Melee, fully called "Eagleland: Onett".
The stage takes place near three buildings. On the left features a yellow house with a tree providing its own platforms. On the right is a small blue house with a festoon over it. In the middle is a tall building that is a drug store. It has two awnings in which if they are stepped on a few times can fall apart. It eventually restores itself.
Occasionally one of three vehicles will drive by, damaging anyone on ground level: a taxi cab, a magenta coupe, and a black tour bus. The black tour bus is one of the cars by the Runaway Five.
Just offscreen to the right is a sign with an image of one of the Runaway Five band members, reading "Caution - A black van driven by this guy has been spotted racing recklessly through town. Be careful!" which references the dangerous black van.
Fourside[]
Based on a major city from Earthbound, Eagleland: Fourside is unlocked after playing 100 Vs. Matches.
Three buildings act as platforms. The left building has a slanted roof with a hovering platform over it. The right building is the shortest and has a flat surface. The middle building is the Montoli Building and is the tallest of the three. The tower is connected to a wide edge to the near right of it. Occasionally a UFO appears as the city is the only place they appear in Earthbound. The UFOs are very slippery.
A yellow helicopter occasionally appears in the background without effects on the fight, which references the one stolen by Pokey in the original game.
Mr. Saturn[]
The creatures that reside in Saturn Valley in EarthBound appear as an item in Melee. When left on the ground, they walk around on their own; when picked up they can be thrown at opponents to deal very small damage, but they can be thrown multiple times and if the enemy blocks the attack they deal a very high amount of damage to the opponent's shield.
The game also has four different challenges related to Mr. Saturn: using only Mr. Saturn during a fight; holding a Mr. Saturn for 30 seconds or more; catching a Mr. Saturn thrown at the player; getting 3 or more individual Mr. Saturns.
Mr. Saturn can also appear as one of the items plucked from the ground by Peach's Down Special attack.
Trophies[]
There are 9 Mother trophies in the game. Ness’s 3 character trophies, the Mr. Saturn item trophy, 1 stage element trophy, and 4 trophies about Mother elements not in the game.
Music tracks[]
The game features 4 Mother music tracks, all new to the series:
- Mother: a medley of music from the original Mother game, the first track being the song Bein' Friends, the overworld and town song that plays when the player has more than one character in their party, the second being the Eight Melodies, the game's main theme, and the third being a clip from the title theme, followed by an enemy encounter tune. It plays in the Onett stage.
- EarthBound: techno-based remix of "Because I Love You", the theme for Fourside in EarthBound, also including portions of the Eight Melodies and sound effects from EarthBound. It plays in the Fourside stage.
- Mother 2: remix of "Pollyanna (I Believe in you)", a recurring music from the Mother series. It is heard as a secondary track on Onett.
- Ness's Victory: The victory fanfare of Ness is a shortened orchestrated version of the second half of the "Sound Stone song" that Ness collects throughout his journey.
Other references[]
Two members of the Runaway Five appear in the game's introduction.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
January 31, 2008
Super Smash Bros. Brawl features from the Mother series:
- 2 playable characters
- 1 boss character (Porky)
- 2 stages
- 2 items
- 1 Assist Trophy helper (Jeff)
- 9 trophies
- 26 stickers
- 1 playable masterpiece (Japan-only)
- 9 music tracks
Playable characters[]
This time the game features two Mother characters, a starting one and an unlockable one.
Lucas[]
The protagonist of Mother 3 replaces Ness as the representative of the Mother series in the game's starting roster.
He's a semi-clone of Ness, sharing most of his special moves, but having very different basic attacks. His grab makes use of Duster's Rope Snake from Mother 3, which also serves as a tether recovery, simulating its function in the original game. His forward special is similar to Ness's, but instead of the baseball bat he uses his own signature weapon, a stick.
He enters the stage by riding on the Mr. Saturn-shaped coffee table he uses in his game to reach Saturn Valley. His up taunt has him fall down, a reference to his clumsy personality at the beginning of Mother 3. He has a victory pose where he pulls out one of the Seven Needles, which were the seals to keep the Dark Dragon from waking up in his game.
Lucas has a different Neutral Special attack than Ness, while the other three are the same albeit with small differences. Like all characters in the game he also gets a Final Smash move, shared with Ness. All these attacks are available in Mother 3, but they can only be used by Kumatora; Lucas is unable to perform any of them.
- Neutral - PK Freeze: Lucas releases a snowflake that moves similarly to Ness's PK Flash, but when the attack button is released it explodes freezing the opponent, rather than just dealing damage. This is based on a move that could be performed by Kumatora in Mother 3 and it deals ice damage to enemies.
- Side - PK Fire: same as Ness, but it always travels horizontally.
- Up - PK Thunder: Lucas releases purple energy rather than blue, and it can hit the opponent multiple times.
- Down - PSI Magnet: same as Ness, but it's faster, heals more damage when absorbing projectiles, and it's centered at his hand rather than his body.
- Final Smash - PK Starstorm: based on a powerful move from Mother 2/EarthBound and Mother 3, Lucas summons stars that start falling onto the stage in a random pattern, causing great damage to opponents. The falling stars are yellow and enter the stage in an inward angle.
- Yellow (default)
- Orange: Resembles Claus, Lucas's twin brother.
- Red
- Blue: Resembles Ness's pajamas in EarthBound.
- Green
- Purple
Ness[]
Ness returns as a playable character in the game, but he's unlockable like in the original Super Smash Bros. with Lucas taking his spot from Melee as a starting character.
He's unlocked by either playing five VS. matches, reflecting ten projectiles, or having him join the player's party in the Subspace Emissary.
He retains the same appearance as previous games, and the pose in his character portrait is based on his official artwork from Mother 2. He keeps the same alternate outfits from previous games, but also gets two new ones that change the pattern of his shirt entirely: a White one, which resebles Fuel from Mother 3, and a Black one with a purple hat and a sprite of Mr. Saturn on the shirt.
His moveset is basically unchanged from the previous game, but like every other character he gets a Final Smash move, shared with Lucas: PK Startorm. Ness summons fewer stars than Lucas, but they're larger and fall in an outward angle. Also they're blue rather than yellow.
Porky[]
Porky Minch, a secondary villain from Mother 2/EarthBound, and the main antagonist of Mother 3, appears as one of the bosses in Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary.
He first appears as the King Statue, a huge statue of himself originally an optional boss in Mother 3. In this game it chases Lucas in an abandoned zoo, effectively serving as the boundary and hazard in a scrolling level. The statue is destroyed by Ness's PK Flash in the following cutscene, revealing Porky in his spider mecha, which initiates the boss fight.
Porky's mecha is based on its appearance from the Mother 3 boss fight. He attacks using various lasers and deploying exploding robot copies of himself, based on the Robot-Porkys from Mother 3.
Like all other bosses he's fought again in The Great Maze, and can be fought in Boss Battles mode.
Stages[]
The game features two Mother stages, both available from the start: the new stage New Pork City, and Onett, which returns from the previous game with only minor changes and is now referred to as EarthBound: Onett.
New Pork City[]
Porky Minch's city and the final location of Mother 3 appears as a new starter stage in the game.
It's the largest stage in the game, and the city itself using sprites from Mother 3 is shown n the background. The stage features various platforms, including a swinging one based on a carnival attraction, a breakable one on the bottom, and the flying limousine used by Lucas and his party to reach the city, occasionally flying by on the bottom of the stage.
The Ultimate Chimera also appears occasionally on the stage, walking around and biting any fighter it meets, causing extremely high damage and knockback, which references its ability in the original game to kill anybody with one single bite.
Items[]
Mr. Saturn returns unchanged from Melee with the same function, but it now causes even less damage when thrown at opponents, but causes twice as much shield damage as before. There also is a new item, the Franklin Badge.
Franklin Badge[]
An item used to reflect certain attacks in all Mother games, it appears in Brawl with the same basic function, but it's capable of reflecting every type of projectile back at the opponent.
The badge itself was never shown in the original games, except being illustrated as a smiley face in the Mother strategy guide, or having purple and yellow circles and a lightning bold in the EarthBound strategy guide, but its appearance in this game is based on the real-life Franklin Badge pins given out through a contest with the Mother strategy guide, and included in the limited edition Deluxe Box of Mother 3.
Jeff[]
Jeff Andonauts, one of the party members from EarthBound appears as an assist trophy in Brawl after making an appearance as a trophy in Melee.
When summoned he sets up his bottle rockets, then nervously takes cover as they launch. Each attack consists in four bottle rockets and one big bottle rocket, all of which home at the closest opponent. Jeff performs a number of attack dependent on the summoner's standing in the match.
Trophies[]
The game only features 9 Mother trophies: Lucas and Ness's 4 character trophies, the 2 item trophies, Jeff's trophy and 2 boss trophies. There isn't any trophy based on Mother elements that are not in the game.
Stickers[]
The game features 26 Stickers from the Mother series:
Mother 2 Masterpiece[]
Super Smash Bros. Brawl features "Masterpieces", playable trial versions of classic titles where the characters from the game originally appeared. One of these is Mother 2, included as a startng Masterpiece exclusively in the Japanese version of the game. It ends after 5 minutes of play.
Music tracks[]
The game features 6 tracks in the EarthBound category (3 available from the start, 3 unlockable), all new to the series and all used on the New Pork City stage, but there also are 2 Mother tracks in the Super Smash Bros. category (1 available from the start, 1 unlockable) returning from Melee and playing on Onett; there's also a completely new victory theme for Lucas and Ness, listed among Sound Effects in the Fanfare category.
Base tracks:
- Porky's Theme: remix of the track "His Highness' Theme", combined with "LOG-O-TYPE" from Mother 3.
- Unfounded Revenge Smashing Song of Praise: remix of two music tracks from Mother 3, from the boss fights against Fierce Pork Trooper, and Steel Mechorilla respectively.
- Humoresque of a Little Dog: remix of the music that plays inside drug stores and department stores in Mother and Mother 2/EarthBound. It also includes an extra line coming from the MOTHER 1+2 Soundtrack version of the track.
- Mother (Melee): medley of music from the original Mother game, returning from Melee.
- Fanfare - 10: Lucas and Ness's victory theme, it's a sped-up cover of "Mother Earth", the main theme of the original Mother.
Unlockable tracks: (all these are unlocked by collecting the respective CD)
- Mother 3 Love Theme: remix of the main theme from Mother 3, also including part of the music played when Hinawa dies in the game.
- You Call This a Utopia?!: remix of "His Highness' Theme", combined with "The Pig King's Playroom" and "Theme of King P" from Mother 3.
- Snowman: arrangement of the music that plays in the Snowman town in Mother, though it was also featured in EarthBound and Mother 3. The version in this game is an almost exact recreation of the track from the Mother 3+ album.
- Mother 2 (Melee): remix of the recurring Mother song "Pollyanna (I Believe in you)", returning from Melee.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS[]
September 13, 2014 (3DS); November 21, 2014 (Wii U)
Being alternate versions of the same game, these two feature mostly the same content, except for stages and trophies and including some different modes. Specifically they feature from the Mother series:
- 2 playable characters (1 base, 1 DLC)
- 2 Smash Run enemies (3DS exclusive mode)
- 2 stages across both versions:
- 3DS: 1 stage (Magicant)
- Wii U: 1 stage
- 2 items
- 2 Assist Trophies
- 1 Mii fighter costume (DLC)
- 4 items and 1 enemy in Smash Tour (Wii U-exclusive mode)
- 21 Trophies across both versions
- 3DS: 15 trophies
- Wii U: 14 trophies
- 1 playable Masterpiece (Wii U exclusive mode)
- 9 Music tracks
Playable characters[]
Only Ness return as a playable character in the base game, being unlockable in the 3DS version and available from the start in the Wii U version, but Lucas was added as DLC on June 14, 2015.
Ness[]
Ness returns as a playable character, unlocked in the 3DS version by playing 10 VS matches or clearing Classic Mode. He's a starting character in the Wii U version.
With EarthBound still being the character's only appearance outside the Super Smash Bros. series, his appearance and moveset are largely unchanged, although his Final Smash move, PK Starstorm, was changed as the stars now fall on a straight path which the player can orient left and right.
In the Boxing Ring stage, he is referred to as “The PSI Powerhouse”, possibly referencing his strong PSI attacks in the Super Smash Bros. games that he is known to use.
Ness keeps all alternate outfits from the previous game, but the Blue outfit has white stripes instead of yellow ones, and he also gets two new outfits: a Cyan one with a pattern on the shirt resembling Master Belch from EarthBound, and a Purple one with a tile pattern on the shirt resembling the background pattern from the file select and character naming screens from EarthBound.
Like every other character he received two custom variants to each of his special moves, including ones based on Lucas:
- Neutral:
- Rising PK Flash: Ness releases a purple flash larger than the regular move, but it deals less damage and it can't be freely moved.
- PK Freeze: Lucas's move from the previous game, but it keeps the same inertia as PK Flash. Unlike most other custom moves in the game, this also changes Ness's cry to "PK Freeze!". Ness is unable to use the PK Freeze in EarthBound, where it could only be used by Paula and Poo.
- Side:
- PK Bonfire: a variation on PK Fire that doesn't travel as far, but the flame stays active longer.
- PK Fire Burst: based on Lucas's version of the move from the previous game, Ness always fires the lightning bolt horizontally.
- Up:
- Lasting PK Thunder: based on Lucas's version of PK Thunder from the previous game, it has a purple color and can deal multiple hits to opponents.
- Rolling PK Thunder: more powerful, but slower version of the move.
- Down:
- PSI Vacuum: Instead of absorbing attacks, Ness draws opponents in and then releases an explosion.
- Forward PSI Magnet: based on Lucas's version of PSI Magnet from the previous game, the energy field appears in front of Ness.
Lucas[]
Lucas was added to the game as a downloadable character on June 14, 2015.
His appearance was slightly updated, being taller with different body proportions.
His special moves received only minor changes, and keep some small differences to Ness's even when Ness is customized with Lucas's moves. However his Final Smash, PK Starstorm, was changed to match Ness's.
Like all other DLC characters in the game, Lucas doesn't get any custom special move.
In the Boxing Ring stage, he is referred to as “Boy from Nowhere”, referencing the setting of Mother 3, Nowhere Islands. Even the PAL English title, “The Tazmilian Devil” is a reference to Lucas’ hometown, Tazmily Village.
His Orange and Red alternate outfits remain unchanged, while the Blue outfit received a minor change, and he gets 4 completely new outfits. The new or reworked ones are:
- Blue: now has yellow stripes instead of white, basically making Lucas swap costumes with Ness.
- Black: outfit with a sprite of the Masked Man's face from Mother 3, it also changes Lucas's hair grey and gives him lighter skin, likely based on the Masked Man.
- Cyan: also changing Lucas's hair brown, it resembles Duster from Mother 3.
- Green: Lucas wears a green shirt with a sprite of Boney's head from Mother 3 on it, possibly based on Boney's human disguise from Mother 3.
- Purple: the shirt features a sprite of a baby Drago from Mother 3 on it.
Smash Run enemies[]
This 3DS-exclusive mode features many enemies that must be fought by players, including two from the Mother series:
Devil Car[]
One of the enemies from the original Mother, also known as Psycho Car, appears as one of the enemies in Smash Run after appearing as a Sticker in Brawl.
It's very resistant and attacks by running over players, spinning in place to deal multiple hits, and spew out paralyzing exhaust fumes, an attack which it also has in the original game.
Starman[]
A recurring enemy from the Mother series appears as one of the enemies in Smash Run after appearing as a trophy in Melee and a Sticker in Brawl. Its appearance is white, apparently based on the original Mother.
It teleports around and attacks with two versions of the PK Beam: PK Beam γ, consisting in one single beam attack, and PK Beam Ω, consisting in multiple beams in all directions. This is based on an attack from the original Mother.
Stages[]
Each version of the game features one single Mother stage, with the 3DS version including the new unlockable stage Magicant, and the Wii U version including once again the Onett stage from Melee and Brawl.
Onett returns almost unchanged, but the moving cars now all have the same effect, rather than dealing slightly different damage and knockback.
Magicant[]
The only new Mother stage across both versions, it's unlocked exclusively in the 3DS version alongside Ness himself.
The stage's basic appearance is based on the realm from the original Mother, however it also includes elements from its appearance in EarthBound.
On the rightmost platform is a house based on the Flying Men house from EarthBound, and one Flying Man occasionally appears in front of it, depicted using sprites from the game itself. The first player to touch the Flying Man will turn him into their ally, and he will fight against opponents until he's knocked out, which references how in both Mother and EarthBound Flying Men can join the player's party and help them fight enemies while in Magicant.
Just like in EarthBound, when a Flying Man is defeated, atombstone appears near the house, then after a while a new Flying Man appears, and again like in the original game only up to five Flying Men can show up in a single fight.
Additional elements from EarthBound can appear on the middle platform, consisting in a tree, a giant tomato, an octopus statue, or a Mobile Sprout.
Additional platforms can appear in the form of The Sky Runner vehicle in the sky, or Dungeon Man walking underneath the main platforms.
The sky in the background also sometimes rips open showing scenes from Mother and EarthBound, specifically:
- Ninten outside his house with his dog, Mick.
- Ninten on the roof of Twinkle Elementary School meeting Lloyd.
- Ness and Paula traveling in Threed with citizens and enemy zombies in the area.
- Ness, Paula, Jeff and Poo at the Lumine Hall sanctuary with the scrolling text on the wall reading, "I'm Ness...". The text, however, has a different font than in EarthBound.
- Ness, Paula, Jeff and Poo walking near the Phase Distorter 2 in Saturn Valley before their departure to fight Giygas.
Items[]
Mr. Saturn and the Franklin Badge return with the same function, but if Mr. Saturn thrown at blocking opponents it now always breaks their shield.
Assist Trophies[]
Jeff returns from Brawl as an Assist Trophy, and there also is a new one:
Starman[]
The Starman appears as an Assist Trophy, behaving the same way as its Smash Run counterpart, but it's a different, grey coloration, apparently being based on the Starman from the second Mother game, rather than the original.
The Assist Trophy Starman can be attacked and defeated, and when this happens the writing "SMAAAASH!!" appears, which is the same writing that would appear in the Mother series when an attack deals a critical hit.
Flying Man Mii outfit[]
A Flying Man costume for Mii Brawlers was made available as DLC on July 31, 2015. It consists in a Flying Man Hat, and a Flying Man Outfit.
This outfit was created by reusing parts from a scrapped 3D model of the Flying Man, originally planned for the Magicant stage, before being replaced by the 2D Flying Man sprites due to limits of the 3DS console.
Smash Tour elements[]
This board game-like mode exclusive to the Wii U version of the game features four items and one enemy from the Mother series.
Items take the form of trophies, and there are three types of items in this mode: red items, that take effect on the battle, blue items, that take effect on the game board, and green items, that are usable in both. The Mother ones are:
Mr. Saturn (Red): Makes it easier to break shields with attacks.
Franklin Badge (Red): Start battle wearing a Franklin Badge.
Porky (Green): Steals a Tour Item used by another player.
Ultimate Chimera (Red): Takes two fighters from the last opponent KO'd instead of just one. It will activate even if the user did not place first in the battle.
The enemy is Flying Man, which appears on the board and starts following the first player to bump into it; it then knocks away the first opponent that the player bumps into, before disappearing.
Trophies[]
The list of trophies differs between the two versions of the game, with the 3DS version including 15 Mother trophies (13 in the base game and 2 only available as DLC) and the Wii U version including 14 trophies (11 base, 3 DLC). 8 trophies are the same in both versions (7 base, 1 DLC), 7 trophies are exclusive for the 3DS version (6 base, 1 DLC) and 6 trophies are exclusive for the Wii U version (4 base, 2 DLC), so there are 21 Mother trophies in total across both versions (17 base, 4 DLC).
A Lucas trophy is available in the base game in the "series related" category, different from the ones added alongside the DLC in the "Fighters" category. Buying the Lucas DLC also changes the name of the PK Starstorm trophy to "PK Starstorm (Ness)" to distinguish it from Lucas's.
Note: both versions of the game have an Alternate character trophy for each of the two fighters, therefore these are sometimes listed as appearing in both games, however since they feature completely different models, we list them as separate.
EarthBound Masterpiece[]
Masterpieces return only in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U due to the limitations of the 3DS console.
After appearing exclusively in the Japanese version of Brawl, EarthBound is once again a playable masterpiece, but it now needs to be unlocked by getting 1968 ft. or more in Home-Run Contest. It still plays for 5 minutes and starts at the opening cutscene.
Music tracks[]
The 3DS version of the game only includes 2 Mother tracks, both new to the series, both playing on the Magicant stage and unlocked with it.
The Wii U version features 9 Mother tracks, including both from the 3DS version, 6 returning from previous games and the new track "Onett Theme / Winters Theme".
All of these play on the Onett stage, and only the track "Unfounded Revenge / Smashing Song of Praise" needs to be unlocked, while all the others are available from the start.
Ness and Lucas's victory fanfare also returns unchanged from Brawl, but it's unavailable in the Sound Test and is therefore not listed here.
3DS:
- Magicant / Eight Melodies (Mother): an arrangement of the "Mother" and "Eight Melodies" tracks from the original Mother.
- Smiles and Tears: a remix of the ending theme from EarthBound.
Wii U:
- Pollyanna (I Believe in You): remix of the recurring song from the Mother series. It returns from Melee and Brawl, where it was called "Mother 2", but it's shortened for this game.
- Onett: medley of music from the original Mother game, returning from Melee and Brawl, where it was called "Mother"; in this game the track is named after the stage it plays in (despite having no relation with the location itself from EarthBound).
- Magicant / Eight Melodies (Mother): an arrangement of the "Mother" and "Eight Melodies" tracks from the original Mother, returning from the 3DS version.
- Snowman: arrangement of the music that plays in the Snowman town in Mother, returning from Brawl.
- Onett Theme / Winters Theme: remix of two themes from EarthBound: the music that plays when Ness is in Onett, and the music that plays when Jeff escapes his dormitory in Winters.
- Smiles and Tears: a remix of the ending theme from EarthBound, returning from the 3DS version.
- Porky's Theme: remix of the track "His Highness' Theme", combined with "LOG-O-TYPE" from Mother 3, returning from Brawl.
- Mother 3 Love Theme: remix of the main theme from Mother 3, returning from Brawl.
- Unfounded Revenge / Smashing Song of Praise: remix of two music tracks from Mother 3, returning from Brawl. The only unlockable Mother track in the game, it's unlocked by collecting the respective CD.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features many elements from the Mother series, including:
- 2 playable characters
- 4 stages
- 3 items
- 2 Assist Trophies
- 1 Mii fighter costume and 1 Mii Fighter hat
- 28 spirits
- 14 music tracks
Playable characters[]
Both Mother characters return in Ultimate, and not being among the eight starting characters from the original Super Smash Bros. they need to be unlocked by either having them join the party in Adventure Mode: World of Light, playing enough VS matches, or clearing Classic mode with specific characters.
Ness[]
Being one of the characters from the original Super Smash Bros., Ness is one of the easiest to unlock, being the first character unlocked by playing VS Matches and first character in Kirby's Classic Mode unlock tree.
He retains the same appearance, alternate outfits and basic moveset as the previous game, but many of his PSI attacks now include visual effects more similar to EarthBound and his PSI Magnet move now causes small damages to nearby opponents.
His Final Smash, PK Starstorm, is reverted to its function from Brawl, and Ness is now joined by his teammates Paula and Poo when performing the move.
His Classic Mode is called "Home to Onett!" and is based on Ness's journey from EarthBound in reverse from Magicant to Onett. The fights are:
- Round 1: vs. Ness (Blue) in Magicant. This is based on Ness meeting his younger self near the end of the game.
- Round 2: vs. Lucas in New Pork City.
- Round 3: vs. three R.O.B.s in Fourside. This is a reference to the Sentry Robots fought in the Monotoli Building.
- Round 4: vs. Sheik in Gerudo Valley, with the only item available being Mr. Saturn. The background music is Bein' Friends. This is based on Ness's visit to Saturn Valley.
- Round 5: vs. two Toon Link (Black) in Luigi's Mansion, and with the only Assist Trophy available being Jeff. The background music is Unfounded Revenge / Smashing Song of Praise. This is based on Jeff first appearing in the zombie-infested town of Threed.
- Round 6: vs. Villager and Isabelle in Onett, and with the only Assist Trophy available being Starman. This is based on Starman Junior appearing as the first boss battle of the game.
The final boss is Master Hand.
Lucas[]
Lucas returns in Ultimate as an unlockable character, being the 36th character unlockable by playing VS Matches and the seventh character in Kirby's Classic Mode unlock tree.
He retains the same appearance and alternate outfits as the previous game, and his basic moveset received only minor changes, but his PSI attacks are now dominantly light blue, resembling the colors of PK Love from Mother 3. Also like Ness his PK Starstorm Final Smash was changed to have the same function as in Brawl, making it once again different from Ness. When performing the move he's also joined by his teammates Kumatora and Boney.
His Classic Mode is called "Magic, Sacred Powers, and PSI!" and all his opponents are characters with magical abilities. The final boss is Master Hand.
Stages[]
All Mother stages from previous games return in Ultimate, being Onett, Fourside, New Pork City, and Magicant.
The stages are mostly unchanged, save for graphical enhancements, but the helicopter in Fourside was changed to more closely resemble the one from EarthBound, and the UFO was given a new animation showing it fly into the moon. Also in New Pork City the Ultimate Chimera's bite now always instantly kills any bit fighter rather than causing great damage.
In Magicant if one looks inside Dungeon Man's eyes it's possible to see its creator and human counterpart Brick Road.
In this game it's also possible to turn off Stage Hazards, which removes the cars in Onett, UFO in Fourside, Ultimate Chimera in New Pork City, and any obstacle in Magicant including the Flying Man, and it will make all moving platforms stationary and all breakable platforms unbreakable.
Items[]
Both Mr. Saturn and the Frankling Badge return unchanged from the previous game, but there also is a new item:
Ramblin' Evil Mushroom[]
The enemy from Mother 2/EarthBound appears as an item in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. When left on the ground it walks around the stage and will release spores all around when hit, then if picked up it acts as a shooting weapon, shooting a short ranged spore attack. A mushroom grows on the head of any fighter hit by the spores, and this causes their controls to be reversed, both effects being based on the Mushroomization status that the Ramblin' Evil Mushroom can inflict on the player's characters in the original game.
Assist Trophies[]
Both Jeff and Starman return as Assist Trophies in Ultimate, unchanged from their previous appearance.
Mii costumes[]
The Flying Man Hat and Flying Man Outfit for Mii Brawlers return and are now available in the base game, but there also is a new Mr. Saturn Hat. All three items are available for purchase in the in-game shop, or given as random rewards.
Spirits[]
The game features 28 spirits from the Mother series. Most of them are unlockable in Spirits mode, either in Adventure Mode or the Spirits Board, where the player must win in an fight with specific conditions, simulating a fight against the spirit's character.
Alternative unlock criteria are indicated when available.
Each spirit is usually represented by artwork from their original game, but the two fighter spirits also have alternate artwork from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate itself.

Note: the Masked Man spirit originally used artwork taken from a slightly altered version of the sprite, featured in a piece of fanart on DeviantArt. The only differences are three pixels on his helmet (most notably the lighter grey pixel above his left eye), but part of nearby images cropped alongside the main sprite were also found in the file, hidden away through image masking. The sprite was changed to an accurate sprite from Mother 3 in update to Version 2.0.0 on January 29, 2019.
Music tracks[]
The game features 14 Mother tracks, including all 12 stage tracks from previous games and 2 new ones (listed in bold).
12 tracks are available from the start, while 2 tracks are unlocked as random rewards or by purchasing them from the in-game shop.
Unlike previous games, this time each track can be chosen to play on any Mother stage. Update to Ver. 8.1.0 on August 4, 2020 allowed any of these tracks to be played on Battlefield, Small Battlefield, Big Battlefield, and Final Destination stages.
The Mother victory fanfare is remade to a new flourished, faster arrangement of the final two melodies of the "Eight Melodies" from EarthBound Beginnings, but it's unavailable in the Sound Test and is therefore not listed here.
